The idea is to clearly mark where you must stop before entering a runway or another critical area, using both a sign and pavement marking that are easy to recognize from a distance. The taxiway hold position sign is colored yellow with black inscription, which signals a hold point on the taxiway rather than a line of direction or a runway boundary. This sign tells you that you’re at the point where you must stop unless ATC clears you to cross.

On the pavement, the corresponding marking is the hold-short line across the taxiway. It consists of two solid lines and two dashed lines: the solid lines are closest to the runway or protected area, and you must not cross them without explicit clearance; the dashed lines on the opposite side indicate where crossing would be allowed once cleared. The combination of the yellow sign and the hold-short marking gives a clear, redundant cue to pilots about where to stop and where crossing is permitted.
